Film Restoration

A John Lowry interview posted up on the Apple Computer website where he talks about how he restores old degraded film.

“It’s like cleaning your glasses so you can see more. We want to remove the veil so that you can see everything that’s in the original.”

It’s a fascinating process involving removing dirt, scratches, color changes, and other items then using a render farm of Powermacs to stitch things back together. It brings to mind the fact that even in the digital age, archiving of data is still a difficult and important task – made even more important due to the vast quantities of data that are being generated by computers and stored to media like disks or CD’s with shelf lives of only 25 years or so.
