Kazaa to Legally Distribute Bollywood Film

p. According to a News.com “(extlink)story”:http://rss.com.com/2100-1026_3-5106829.html “(extlink)Kazaa”:http://www.kazaa.com is working with a Bollywood movie house to legally distribute a film and its soundtrack. This is quite possibly one of the smartest (and most economically rewarding moves) that they could take.

p. The film “(extlink)Supari”:http://www.planetbollywood.com/Film/Supari/index.html is the trial run for what could possibly be the perfect application of peer-to-peer technology. Bollywood films in general, with their wide appeal among a geographically dispersed post-diaspora Indian population are an almost ideal candidate for internet distribution in general, and peer-to-peer in particular. You have a strong, well defined audience which is too spread out for it to be commercially viable to stock most films in this category through traditional retail outlets, especially rental or other services.

p. With internet distribution, however, the entire equation changes. Not only can you now market to population concentrations FAR below what would support a retail store, but p2p technology eases the economic burdens even further. By helping to reduce the costs of scaling your distribution, p2p enables every film to be distributed the same way, and films that become popular will automatically distribute themselves more easily. It’s a win-win situation.

p. Now, hopefully Kazaa will be able to pick up additional niche markets who are in a similar situation to Bollywood. Anime comes to mind immediately. So in a way does British comedy. Perhaps with the BBC’s new desire to “(extlink)digitize their archives for internet distribution”:http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com/StoryFT/FullStory&c=StoryFT&cid=1059479642853&p=1012571727085 a Kazaa partnership to leverage p2p technology could help scale what will surely be a massive infrastructure necessary.
