Monday, October 22nd, 2007

I got into the UK and one of the first things I wanted to do was to unlock my AT&T cell phone so that I could use it with a local SIM card. Afterall, being able to take my phone internationally was one of the main benefits of switching to a GSM provider.

Getting the unlock [...]

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

Upgraded this blog to Wordpress 2.3 — I’m particularly interested in seeing how the new Tagging features work out (I’ve just been pasting Technorati tags into my entries), though I’m sure there’s other goodies here and there.

Certificates: Oracle Wallet -> Tomcat

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

Bottom line: scrub your certificates through Mozilla/Firefox. Keep reading if you want more background.

So I recently experienced an unreasonable amount of pain trying to import a Verisign certificate that was locked into an Oracle Wallet for use in the Tomcat SSL connector. So of course the decent thing to do seems to be to put [...]

Looks like I’m famous A Q&A on how I got involved with JA-SIG and some of my thoughts on education and open-source was posted in the latest issue of the JA-SIG Newsletter (which Roger has done a superior job of publishing monthly, and on a real schedule too — congratulations!)

Friday, August 31st, 2007

Rethink: Beginning Rails: From Novice to Professional: But where does this leave individual developers/firms/companies who’ve used the logo to promote Rails services or Rails-based products? If the logo is a trademark (and it is), then shouldn’t everyone who’s used it in vain stop using it? I should think so, but it would be nice if there [...]

BBC NEWS | UK | England | Staffordshire | Teenager sues over porn picture

This BBC article has a note about a photo that a British teenage posted on the internet was snapped up and used on the cover of an adult DVD. Adding insult to injury though, is the company’s response to the girl’s outrage [...]

Fuel for Thought: Financial Page: The New Yorker

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Fuel for Thought: Financial Page: The New Yorker: In calling for a law requiring better gas mileage in our cars, then, voters are really saying that they’re unhappy with the collective result of the choices they make as buyers. This is a neat quote, summing up how competitive pressures can cause every individual to become pressured into [...]

JA-SIG Conference: Matt Asay Keynote

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

> “Connected world, Connected Software”, “Open source produces better software” (81% of respondents via Gartner)

Matt’s perspective on focusing innovation on the “last mile” plays well with my thoughts on focusing on delivering institutional value. It’s interesting in that he combines that perspective with the pitch that open-source empowers you to build software to suit your [...]
